The Republic of Singapore

“At 647.5 sq km, Singapore is a mere full stop at the end of the Malay Peninsula.” It became a sovereign independent state on 9 August 1965, with Mr. Lee Kuan Yew as its Prime Minister. Prior to 1965, Singapore was a colony of the British, which went through a tumultuous phase during the Japanese Occupation first, followed by a constitutional experiment with the Malaya. These periods- Japanese Occupation and Merger with Malaya, are crucial in understanding politics in Singapore.
